LinkedIn groups for broadcasters

If you're involved with the broadcasting industry and using LinkedIn (and if not, why aren't you??!!), here are some groups you might want to consider joining.

The first, Radio/TV Station Buyers, is a group for station owners and prospective buyers (and in full disclosure, I am the Admin). We have almost 600 members, including a lot of well known broadcasters. Our discussions are timely and relevant. Please consider joining us and participating regularly. It is a good resource for those of us in the business of buying, selling, and building value with radio and television stations.

The second, Future of Radio Online, is run by Jim Hooker and is an offshoot from an annual conference which Jim hosts on Hilton Head Island. This will be a great resource for contemplating radio's future. I recommend it highly.

Radio/TV Station Buyers group on LinkedIn tops 150 members

Radio/TV station trading is alive and well (at least online)!

Six weeks or so ago, I started a group on LinkedIn (Radio/TV Station Buyers) devoted to members interested in radio and television station trading. Since, the group has expanded to over 150 members, surprising given the dismal economy and barely accessible credit markets.

Group members are encouraged to particpate in industry discussions, and post relevant news and jobs. If you're not yet involved, bookmark this site and join us:

If you know other broadcasters (or prospective broadcasters) who might benefit from our group's contacts and information, please invite them to check us out.

Station trading coming back to life?

Just a week ago, I formed a new group on LinkedIn (Radio/TV Station Buyers). I posted a few discussion topics, added some news feeds, and emailed a handful of broadcasters on LinkedIn to join. The "mission" of the group is simple:

"Dedicated to assisting broadcasters and first-time-buyers to successfully value, structure, finance, and purchase radio and television stations.

Members are encouraged to share news, information, and ideas on acquiring radio and television station businesses."

Now, just seven days later, the group has 73 new members. Many are existing station owners; some are broadcasters looking to acquire their first station. Frankly, I'm astounded. Reading the daily headlines, one gets the impression that broadcasting is "over." Certainly, we have our challenges, compounded by a soft economy, an even softer ad market, and an absolute lack of credit. But if the rapid growth of our little group on LinkedIn is any indication, there is still plenty of interest out there in building broadcasting businesses.

If you fall into that category, join us on LinkedIn:

And finally, as with any social group, it is only as good as the input from its members. Please contribute your thoughts, news and ideas. We all want to hear from you.

"If it was up to me, I would . . ."

My blog post, "Less is NOT More . . . It is SIMPLE," drew some comments on LinkedIn's Radio Ink group. Michael Walters at Radio Ink asked me to respond to, "If it was up to me, I would..."

That may have been a very polite way of asking, "OK, if you're so smart, how would you really put your ideas to work in the trenches of broadcasting?" Fair question. Here is how I answered:

If it was up to me, I would WIN THE LOTTO!

But more to the point . . .

  • Hire and train more salespeople.
  • Hire salespeople to just sell the "digital products" (websites, streams, email, search, etc.) .
  • Spend more money on researching what our consumers really want to hear (and see!).
  • Be "live & local" 24/7.
  • Pay for real talent.
  • Promote, promote, and promote some more.
  • Use every social marketing technique out there (and a few not yet out there).
  • Pay my people well and offer benefits comparable to Google's (including tuition reimbursement).
  • Reward risk-taking.
  • Throw away the Policies and Procedures manual.
  • Have fun at the office (and encourage use of Facebook, Twitter, etc. on company time).
  • Have non-station branded web products.
  • Have the best local news, public affairs, and community involvement in town.
  • Have a radio chip in the iPhone (we can dream, can't we?); Actually, I think that there is a strong homeland security argument for it. How did your cell phone work in the last hurricane? How did the Internet work when MJ died? What if some kook had detonated a nuclear bomb? We need radio on mobile devices.
  • Get the kids involved in the business again.

Utopian? Yes (but you did ask). We need to start thinking and doing. Soon.
